Places to visit once out of Luanda

Quicama is Angola’s only active game park. Unfortunately, during the 25 year of civil war that took place in the park, almost all of the game animals were killed off. Thankfully, Operation Noah’s Ark (a dedicated program that re-introduces game animals) has restored the park to some of its former glory. Today, tourists can go on a safari to see the growing wildlife population. This population consists of elephants, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, African manatees, red Levers, wide variety of Birds, and others. The vegetation varies greatly from the banks of the Kwanza River to the interior of the park: mangroves, dense forest, savannah, scattered trees, cacti, imbondeiros, etc.

Museum in Luanda, Angola, keeps the memories of the torture endured by thousands of slaves before they were shipped to North America and South America countries by European slave traders to work in coffee, sugar cane, cotton and indigo plantations without any remuneration. Founded in 1997, the Museum has a collection of tools, such as handcuffs, leg cuffs, punishment paddle, hunting rifles, bow and arrows, which were used to coerce and immobilize slaves. The museum also features many photos of the slaves and Luanda during the days of slavery. The museum of slavery is built in a little chapel dating back to the 17th century, widely known as “Capela da Casa Grande”, where the slaves were held and baptized prior to being taken off to the Americas, most of them to Brazil and the United States of America.

Located about 40km south of Luanda, the Moon Viewpoint is a spectacular landscape, shaped by years of rains and erosion, which in turn makes it look similar to the surface of the moon…
